This image shows that the most expensive New York Subway cost 20x more than the most expensive subway in Oslo, per kilometer!
I get it, New York's insane land prices and population density should make building anything much more expensive than in Oslo.
But what if I told you that these factors contribute less than 10% to the insane cost difference, and that many costs, including labor are much higher in Oslo?
The biggest reason why New York, and US public infrastructure projects in general are insanely expensive (actually by far the most expensive in the world) is because of bad project management and insane NIMBYism.
If subway projects are set up by experienced people, NIMBYs are controlled, and long term plans are in place, any big city can afford amazing public transport!
